History of the Primitive lottery

This lottery was proposed by Don Leopoldo de Gregorio, Minister of Finance, better known as Marqués de Esquilache and
created during the government of Carlos III. His goal was to get more money for the state coffers without increasing or
create a new tax. The first draw of the primitive lottery, very similar to the current ones, took place on December 10
of 1763. In this first draw, the collection was 187.500 real (75% destined for awards and 25% for the state.) In that
time, this lottery was known as “lottery by numbers”.

After a few 50 years (year 1812) a new type of lottery was born whose novelty was that the tickets already had a number printed,
This new lottery would be called "Modern Lottery", which gave rise to the current national lottery. At the same time the
"Lottery by Numbers" changed its name and was renamed as it is known today "Primitive Lottery", which continued
gambling until the Government abolished it in the year 1862.

More than a century later (year 1985) the Primitive Lottery was held again by ministerial order according to Royal Decree
1360/1985 of 1 of August, published in the BOE of 7 August 1985. The first draw was held on 17 October

1985 with an excellent collection where sales were 473.213.425 pesetas. Since then, the primitive

In the year 2005 La Primitiva celebrated its twentieth anniversary. For the celebration of these 20 years a special draw was issued
led by Jorge Fernández and Concha Velasco.

So far, the RECORD award in the entire history of the Primitive Lottery was delivered on 15 October 2015, when a single winner
from Barcelona obtained more than 101 Millions of euros.
